Why beach hut weddings rock!

Why you should consider a beach hut wedding in Kent

Why I love photographing beach hut weddings

If you want a wedding that’s fun, relaxed and anything but stuffy, it’s hard to beat a beach hut wedding! I’ve previously been a photographer for a wedding on Herne Bay pier.

It’s a venue that’s right on my doorstep, and one I never tire of photographing. Every wedding here feels different, because couples really make the day their own.

Natalie and Adrian wanted exactly that, a non-traditional setting to say their vows, then a laid-back celebration by the sea with family and friends.

Natalie & Adrian’s summer wedding on Herne Bay Pier

The setting

The sun was out and the waves were gently lapping against the pier as guests arrived and the beach hut was dressed in bright, colourful summer flowers, making a beautiful backdrop for an outdoor ceremony.

One thing that makes this venue so special is that the pier stays open to the public during the day. As the ceremony began, passers-by stopped to watch and cheer the couple on. It adds a warm, community feel you simply don’t get anywhere else.

The ceremony

With guests seated in front of the hut and the sea stretching out behind, Natalie and Adrian exchanged their vows in a calm, intimate moment. Then came the “I dos” and a shower of bright confetti from their guests.

The reception

Then the celebrations moved to a private, fenced-off area at the back of the pier, tables were laid out with the sea on one side and the helter skelter on the other which made it a truly unique spot for a wedding reception.

My favourite photo moments

The carousel is always a highlight,  imagine your guests hopping on for a ride and relive the carefree days of their childhood, while the children scream with laughter. It’s one of my favourite parts of the day to photograph here, because everyone completely lets their hair down.

Seaside treats

Think candy floss, bubbles and a table of cakes and desserts all add to the playful seaside feel and it makes for brilliant candid shots.

Portraits on the beach

As the afternoon drew on, I then took Natalie and Adrian down onto the beach, with the pier and the sea behind them, we captured relaxed portraits paddling in the water, sitting on the rocks and simply enjoying a few quiet minutes together away from the party. Finishing the day with some peaceful and fun shots.

My Tips for planning a beach hut wedding

  1. The main thing is to embrace the public setting. The pier is open during the day, so expect a few friendly onlookers but most couples find it adds to the fun.
  2. Bring your own personality! The venue lets you tailor the day, so lean into the seaside theme with colourful flowers, confetti and treats.
  3. Make sure you make time for the rides. Build a slot into your schedule for the carousel  it’s where some of the best candid photos happen.
  4. Don’t forget to plan a beach portrait session,  allow 15–20 minutes to slip down onto the sand for photos with the pier behind you.
  5. Check the tide and the light. Late afternoon usually gives the softest light, and a low tide means more beach to play with.
  6. Pack sensible shoes, sand, shingle and rocks can be tricky in heels, so a spare pair for the beach portraits is a good idea.
