Winters Barns Wedding Venue

Tucked away in the Kent countryside, just a few minutes from the cobbled streets of Canterbury, Winters Barns is one of those venues that photographs beautifully whatever the season, whatever the light, whatever the weather throws at you. I’ve had the pleasure of shooting weddings here, and it’s easily one of my favourite barns in Kent to work in.

Here’s a bit about the history behind the place, and why I think it’s such a brilliant choice for your wedding day.

A Barn with Real History

Winters Barns isn’t a barn conversion knocked up last decade to look old, it genuinely is old. The original farmhouse and the smaller of the two barns date back to around 1660, with the larger barn following in around 1750. Remarkably, roughly 85% of the buildings are original, oak beams, traditional brickwork and all, which is why the place has such a warm, lived-in character rather than that slightly sterile feel you sometimes get with newer conversions.

The Setting

The two barns are linked together, so the day flows seamlessly from ceremony to wedding breakfast to dancing, without guests needing to trek between buildings or brave the weather in between. There’s heating and air conditioning tucked in behind all that original character, so you get the charm of exposed oak beams without anyone shivering through the speeches in November.

Outside, the courtyard is a proper suntrap on a summer afternoon, complete with a wedding arch and those brilliant Kentish hop bines and fairy lights strung up that make for gorgeous evening shots. There are even 100-year-old Bramley apple trees dotted around the grounds, which just adds to that timeless, storybook feel.

Why I Love Photographing Here

As a wedding photographer who likes to keep things natural, relaxed and full of genuine emotion, Winters Barns gives me so much to work with. The oak beams and exposed brick in the ceremony room create incredible texture and depth, perfect for those quiet, candid shots during the vows. Then there’s the courtyard for confetti throws and group shots in natural daylight, and once the sun starts dipping, that arch and the surrounding brickwork become an absolute dream for creative flash-lit portraits.

I got one of my favourite couple portraits ever under that arch at Winters Barns, dramatic lighting, beautiful stonework, and two people completely lost in the moment. That’s the kind of shot this venue hands you if you know where to point the camera.
