Why Swarling Manor is a joy to photograph
Some venues give you one good backdrop. Swarling Manor gives you a whole estate of them, all within a few minutes’ walk.
Tucked away in Petham, just outside Canterbury, it’s one of those places that photographs beautifully anytime of the year. This is my photographer’s guide to the venue, for couples who want to know where the best photos happen and how to plan their day around them.
The venue at a glance
Swarling Manor sits at the heart of an 80-acre estate of Kentish countryside and at its centre is a 17th-century manor house, surrounded by landscaped gardens, lawns and lakes, with a fairy-lit barn and a modern marquee joined together as one space.
There are four places to hold your ceremony, indoors and out, and Coach Cottage on site for getting ready and staying the night. What’s great about that is the morning, ceremony, portraits and party all happen in one place, nobody is watching the clock or waiting for cars and relaxed people make for much better photos.
My favourite photo spots at Swarling Manor
The gazebo and lawn
The gazebo is the classic outdoor ceremony spot, and for good reason. The open lawn gives plenty of room for guests, the light is even and natural, and there’s nothing cluttering the background. It’s also a lovely place to come back to later for a quieter portrait once everyone has moved on to drinks.
The manor house
The 17th-century house gives your photos a sense of history and grandeur. A portrait with the manor behind you is one of those timeless frames that looks as good on a gallery wall in 30 years as it does today.
The stairs
The stairs are perfect for a dramatic entrance, a confetti exit or a big group photo where everyone can actually be seen. Steps are a photographer’s best friend for family groups with no more people hidden behind tall uncles!
The barn
The rustic, fairy-lit barn comes into its own as the day goes on, warm lights, timber and a cosy atmosphere make it ideal for evening portraits, first dances and atmospheric shots once the sun has gone down. It’s also the perfect indoor ceremony option.
The gardens, hedges and statues
The landscaped gardens are where I do most of my couple portraits. Archways, tall hedges and statues give lovely framing, while the tree-lined paths offer softer backgrounds and a bit of privacy away from guests.
The countryside views and lakes
With rolling Kent hills and fields beyond the gardens, there’s always the option of a wide, sweeping shot that shows just how beautiful the setting is. The lakes add reflections and another texture to the mix and from above, a drone gives a stunning sense of the whole estate.
Light and seasons at Swarling Manor
Swarling Manor works all year round, and each season brings its own look.
- Spring: fresh greens and blossom in the gardens, with soft, flattering light, a beautiful time for outdoor ceremonies if you’re happy to keep the barn as a backup.
- Summer: long days and golden evenings. The lawns and gardens are at their fullest, and the hour before sunset is pure magic for portraits with the countryside behind you.
- Autumn: warm colours across the estate and lower, richer light earlier in the day. Golden hour arrives in time for portraits before the wedding breakfast.
- Winter: the fairy-lit barn really shines. Shorter days mean we plan portraits for early afternoon, then make the most of the cosy indoor atmosphere and candlelit details.
Whatever the season, a quick 10–15 minutes slipping away together around golden hour almost always gives couples their favourite photos of the day.
